Munich Christmas Market – The market on Marienplatz – known as the Christkindlmarkt in German – is Munich’s oldest Christmas Market. Its roots are rumored to date back to the Nicholas markets held in the 14th century. Its first mention in town records relates to a market known as the Nikolaidult held on Kaufingerstrasse near the Schönen Turm tower in 1642.

Following the Enlightenment, the Nikolaimarkt was renamed Christmarkt in 1806. After moving locations several times, it found its final home at the heart of the city in 1972, when it became Munich Christmas Market, the so-called Münchner Christkindlmarkt. When the 30-meter Christmas tree is fully decked out and shining with the light of 2,500 candles, the scent of mulled wine is in the air and the sparkle of tinsel is everywhere you look, the cosy atmosphere in the state capital of Munich well and truly captures the magic of the festive period.

Münchner Christkindlmarkt – Der Münchner Christkindlmarkt ist der älteste Weihnachtsmarkt der Stadt. Die Anfänge des Christkindlmarktes sollen mit den sogenannten Nikolausmärkten bereits im 14. Jahrhundert liegen. Urkundlich erwähnt wird eine Nikolaidult erstmals in der Kaufingerstraße beim Schönen Turm anno 1642. Im Zuge der Aufklärung wurde ab 1806 der Nikolaimarkt in Christmarkt umbenannt und fand – nach mehrmaligen Standortwechseln – im Jahr 1972 als „Münchner Christkindlmarkt“ seinen festen Platz im Herzen der Stadt.

Wenn der 30 Meter hohe Christbaum in voller Pracht mit 2500 Kerzen erstrahlt, der Glühwein duftet und das Engelshaar schimmert, dann erfüllt vorweihnachtlicher Zauber die gute Stube der Landeshauptstadt München.
